The Leader in Me is FranklinCovey’s training solution to create high performance schools. The results consistently reported by the 350+ The Leader in Me schools across the United States include:

The Leader in Me is based on Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. For more information, please visit: www.theleaderinme.org. In Leader in Me schools, The 7 Habits are not taught as a curriculum, but become part of the fabric of the school:

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Read the following synopses of the 7 Habits in kids’ language and imagine the result as these habits become the expectations for students’ attitudes and behavior:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission, and look for ways to be a good citizen.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood

I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking.

Habit 6: Synergize

I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us alone. I am humble.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I take time to help others.

Peacemaker Corps. Sponsors Inner City Schools in FranklinCovey’s “The Leader in Me” Process

Peacemaker Corps. – a non-profit organization devoted to creating peace in our streets – identified FranklinCovey’s “The Leader in Me” training process as having the potential to positively transform our inner city youth and communities.  Since funding remains a key barrier to The Leader in Me adoption, Peacemaker Corps partners with inner city schools and districts and makes grants available to them to implement The Leader in Me.  In particular, Peacemaker Corps sponsors schools where:

  • A high proportion of children are from economically disadvantaged situations and/or
  • A high proportion of children are from broken families and/or
  • A high proportion of children are from minority races and ethnicities
Additionally, schools that Peacemaker Corps sponsors not only get FranklinCovey’s The Leader in Me process, but also get an additional training module that teaches the Peacemaker Corps core content.

This peacemaking emphasis – taught in an integrated fashion with the 7 Habits – gives teachers additional tools to help their students overcome the all-too-common physical and emotional violent environments of their homes and communities.  The Peacemaker Program teaches the skills required for non-violent conflict resolution and tolerance through the use of words—“the language of peace”—rather than guns, knives and fists.  For more information, visit:  http://www.peacemakercorps.org/.

In sum, The Leader in Me, sponsored by Peacemaker Corps, dramatically affects entire inner-city communities through an inside-out theory of change, with the school as the critical door-way to changing the students and community:

School Staff Students Family & Community
FranklinCovey teaches The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and other leadership / peacemaking principles to school staff. The school staff integrates the 7 Habits and other leadership / peacemaking principles into classrooms, common areas, and school-wide activities, while applying the principles personally.
Students learn and apply the 7 Habits and Peacemaker, which include skills for:
  • Taking responsibility
  • Goal setting
  • Time management
  • Relationship building
  • Conflict management
  • Listening and speaking
  • Working in teams
  • Problem solving
  • Respecting diversity
  • Making healthy choices
Students take the habits into the home, community, and workforce.

(Note: Schools may choose also to use a variety of methods to teach the 7 habits to parents.)

TRAINING ENGAGEMENT PROCESS FOR SCHOOLS

The Leader and Peacemaker training is a three-year process made up of two separate but related training tracks.  The first track is training for the entire staff of the school – the administrators and teachers, as well as other staff such as the librarian and custodian.  The second track is training with a smaller team of 7-8 people known as a “Lighthouse Team,” whose responsibility it is to ensure strong program implementation and results.

All Staff Training

Year 1
  • Vision facilitation:  FranklinCovey meets with the staff to create a specific direction for the school based on developing students full academic and leadership potential
  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training:  FranklinCovey trains the staff in The 7 Habits to develop them as individuals, increase peer-to-peer trust, and to enable staff to model the principles of leadership
  • The Peacemaker Corps training:  Within the framework of the 7 Habits, FranklinCovey trains the staff in an important application of leadership called peacemaking using examples of non-violent conflict resolution and showing how one can establish peace in difficult environments
  • Student implementation:  FranklinCovey trains the staff in how to bring the principles of the 7 Habits and Peacemakers to the students by embedding these principles into the curriculum, instructional practice, systems, environment, and traditions of the school
Year 2
  • Student Empowerment:  FranklinCovey trains the staff in how to empower students, focusing on two tools:  leadership notebooks and student leadership roles
Year 3
  • Customized Module:  FranklinCovey trains the staff in areas where the school has the greatest need
Lighthouse Team Training

Year 1
  • Lighthouse Team training:  FranklinCovey trains a cross-functional team called the “Lighthouse Team” in how to create a culture of leadership
  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People certification:  FranklinCovey certifies the Lighthouse Team to become trainers in the 7 Habits, so they can train their peers or new teachers
Year 2
  • Lighthouse Team training:  FranklinCovey trains the Lighthouse team in a goal-setting methodology that dramatically increases the team’s ability to execute
Year 3
  • Lighthouse Team training:  FranklinCovey trains the Lighthouse Team in areas where the school has the greatest need
Lighthouse Status

The goal of the three-year engagement process is for a school to dramatically shift its culture—among the staff, student, and parents—and thereby create greater outcomes for the students of those schools.  FranklinCovey measures the impact of this process along nine criteria.  These criteria represent what one would expect to see if the program had been implemented well and the school had truly transformed its culture and performance.

  1. A dedicated team (Lighthouse Team) is in place, meets regularly, and oversees school-wide implementation of The Leader and Peacemaker program
  2. School atmosphere communicates and reinforces the students’ potential to be leaders and peacemakers.
  3. Teachers are integrating leadership language into instruction and curriculum daily.
  4. Staff works together effectively and collaborates across various initiatives to implement the program
  5. Students are provided with meaningful leadership roles and responsibilities.
  6. Parents are involved in activities that support the leadership model and have an understanding of the common language and concepts being used at the school.
  7. A system is in place for setting and tracking goals at the student, classroom, and school-wide level.
  8. The school is holding events to share their school model with the community and other schools.
  9. The school is seeing measurable improvements as a result of implementing The Leader and Peacemaker program.

If a school meets these nine criteria, FranklinCovey awards the school “Lighthouse” status.  The school has become a model of excellence and a shining beacon to other schools throughout the country.  FranklinCovey believes that while this award represents a high level of commitment and devotion among the staff, it is attainable for every school.
